What we should learn...
I haven't entered a PhD program yet, but I have completed a graduate program, specifically a master's degree. It can serve as a stepping stone to doctoral studies. I understand that being a PhD candidate requires not only expert knowledge. It's about learning so much more.
What the world thinks a PhD student learns was also what I believed before entering a graduate program. Holding that pure belief as an eager, innocent student, I was filled with passion, ready to embark on my journey. With my luggage packed, I flew to the land of higher education.
Aside from project management, I have worked on all these skills and know how crucial they are. These abilities --- writing, curiosity, research, resilience, adaptability, collaboration, data analysis, learning agility, communication, critical thinking, problem solving, expert knowledge, and time management --- are not easy to master but they are indispensable.
Before applying to graduate school, I dedicated a tremendous amount of effort to mastering English. At the time, I believed it was the hardest challenge I would have to conquer. However, after studying and living for academic pursuit, my perspective shifted. I no longer think that way. Challenges don’t stop there. I realize there are even greater obstacles to overcome. Now, I have a new answer to what my greatest challenge in life but I’ll keep that a secret for now
One thing is certain: a PhD isn’t just about conducting research or writing a dissertation. It’s a test of resilience, adaptability, and the ability to keep learning, even in the face of setbacks. It demands strong communication skills, critical thinking, and the courage to question and refine ideas. These aren’t just academic skills --- they are life skills.
In any field, on any path we choose, we all need core skills like resilience, adaptability, the ability to learn, communication, and critical thinking.
The sooner you recognize their importance and work to master them, the sooner you’ll not only achieved a PhD but also be prepared for any challenge that life throws your way.
