Only through research do I realize
1. Everything else feels far simpler
I have spent a long time tackling tough and challenging scientific problems. The complexity, the vast knowledge I need to accumulate, and the moments of being stuck make the process mentally demanding. In contrast, I have realized that many other aspects of life are far simpler --- like the straightforward rules of board games, the way relationships thrive on small acts of care, the natural rhythm of daily activities, and much more.
2. Ignoring life's joy
I do enjoy life in my own way, focusing on what truly matters to me. However, I have also come to realize that there are many fun and interesting experiences I have overlooked along the way. For example, attending improv comedy classes just to have fun with other, engaging in endless debate with friends for the joy of it --- something I might not have previously thought about it.
3. The little details I overlook
When solving research problems, I sometimes believe that my work is good enough and will be accepted. But in reality, it is not. I often skip over small yet crucial details that could make it truly excellent.
4. How brilliant people are
I am fortunate to work alongside incredibly intelligent individuals. Their brilliance and exceptional abilities continuously inspire me, pushing me to grow.
5. There is always a better way to do
If something makes me wonder, perhaps it’s a sign that there's a better way to approach it. There is always room for improvement, innovation, and deeper understanding.
PS. The latest post in the "Research in Thoughts" category was published three years ago. I am a researcher with a few years of experience, mostly working as a research assistant as a student. I have relied on logical thinking throughout my academic journey and consider myself quite good at it. At the same time, I am quite wild and a dreamer, constantly seeking inspiration and creativity beyond equations and data.
I have chosen to pursue science/engineering/research as my career. Although it is extremely challenging, I know that even if I fail I will keep moving forward. I aim to develop everything around this journey --- my passion, hobbies, creativity and sense of adventure. Being a bold dreamer from a scientist/engineer/researcher perspective is also an interesting experience. This unique blend not only discover answers, explore possibilities, push boundaries, but also enriches my personal life.
However, this journey comes with its significant challenges. Maintaining focus and managing emotions are key areas I need to improve. Therefore, discipline and emotional intelligence are essential for me to fulfill my mission.
Understanding this helps me accept myself with self-compassion. Sometimes, I break the rules I set too high for myself, but that's okay. It allows me to adjust both my behavior and standards, making them work for me rather than against me. In the end, I am the one who decides what is best for me --- and beyond that, it is uniquely my own, bringing a fulfillment that is just as unique.
